Wetlands sustain more life than any other ecosystem - as much as
many tropical forests and more than good farmland.
Wetlands, which occupy 6% of the earth's land and freshwater surface, play a
major role in maintaining the stability of the global environment. They nurture
hundreds of different species and provide the critical breeding and rearing
habitat for a wide diversity of wildlife. Canada has 14% of the planet's
wetlands. Today, Canadian wetlands are under pressure from agriculture, urban
and industrial land use development.
